Zamfam Site

Our postal address: PO Box 110079 Solwezi. Zambia.
Welcome to our website!
Our family, the Bruce's have been living and working in the town of Solwezi, capital of the North Western Province of Zambia since 2004 under SIM ( Serving In Mission) .
We returned to New Zealand for home assignment at the end of 2007 and have come back to Zambia (August 2008) for a second term.
Last term our task was to co-ordinate the APPLE project (Aids Prevention Plus Life Education) We handed this role to our Zambian colleague, John Lijimu returning with a new focus: "Communicating Hope and Truth to the people of Zambia".
We aim to do this by Adam's involvement in the media, producing a small educational magazine ( called "Real Life") aimed at teaching HIV AIDS prevention plus relevant youth related topics to high schoolers.
He is also hosting a one hour show entitled "Spotlight" on the local radio station ( FCC). The programme "spotlights" issues of the Christian faith through interviews, discussion and music.
Heather is involved with LUSA Home based care, supporting those who are living with HIV AIDS. This includes providing spiritual and emotional support through visiting widows and families as well as assisting with their feeding programme for orphans.
We also have Amanda with us who has come to help teach our 3 children the NZ correspondence school as well as learn about life in Zambia.
Have a look around our site - we'd love to hear back from you!

Mourning the late President Mwanawasa

President Mwanawasa's body was flown around the various Zambian provinces for mourners to view. I was fortunate to be one of the few muzungus ( white people ) in Solwezi to be able to view the body of a great man. See video "Death of a President" on this

Death of a President video

We are so grateful to people like Sung sik Park in Kitwe who has a wireless broadband system at his house we got here yesterday (Fri 19 Sept) and have spent most of the time updating software - and at last I can update our website. We are here for hte weekend and today we meet up with some other SIM oclelagues for GULP - Gathering in Prayer Unity and Lunch ..cant remember what the P is for (... and Pudding?). So its a bt of a worship time and a connection time with like minded folks. We used to come every so often last term and alwasy enjyed the fellowship. Ive been asked to update the SIM Zambia webste so have brought the camera to take headshots of people so you can meet them once I get that sorted.

In the meantime, check out my first video placed on this site, "Death of a President". I used the imovie software on my Apple Mac to put together my very first movie. The camera I used was brand new and I hadn't read up how to use the video setting properly, so it was on a setting that was...

It was a priviledge to be one of the few white people to view the late President Mwanawasas body . His coffin was flown to all the Provinces of Zambia for people to see. I wasn't permitted to film the actual body of the president but you can see I got right up to the building where Zambians were lined up to go inside for a quick viewing. I was able to go in but Cameron who was the only family member with me was told he was too young. He waited outside with a friend we met. There is a bit of violence where the mob tried to break into the que of people who had lined up since 5am, viewer discretion is advised! :)For more background on the video, see my blog entry entitled Death of a President.

It was a smooth journey, except for one lost hand bag with some valuables in it. We were relieved that Qantas contacted us to say it had turned up safely in Sydney!
we had a warm welcome both from SIM colleagues in Lusaka and the many visits from friends here in Solwezi.
Coming back the second time is a lot easier. We know where to shop for specific groceries, and we are more confident with the culture.
Solwezi has grown a great deal - the increase in population is very noticeable, the main road has been widened - there are more shops and more roads have been tarred.
Despite the changes, it really does feel like our second home.
However this time we have a new purpose for being here. How that will all work out is a matter of consultation, through prayer and discussion.
We have a meeting with the SIM leadership on 6 Sept to discuss our goals and plans for the next 2 and a half years.
The children have started school. Jacob enjoyed being part of the action on his first day, Came...
